Tartu’s Car-Free Avenue among six best environmental and climate success stories in an international competition

or the second year in a row, the international organization Green Destinations, which develops sustainable tourism, has featured Tartu in its TOP 100 list of sustainable destinations. This time, Car-Free Avenue was among the six best success stories in the Environment and Climate category.

The prerequisite for inclusion in the list is an outstanding success story, from which other sustainable tourist destinations can also learn. In 2020, Smart Bike Share and city buses running on Estonian green gas were presented as Tartu’s success stories, earning second place in the Environment and Climate Category. In 2021, Car-Free Avenue, which was recognised as one of the six best in the Environment and Climate Category, was presented as Tartu’s success story. The top three will be announced in March, at the awards ceremony for the Green Destinations Story Awards.

According to Helen Kalberg, Marketing Manager for the City of Tartu, the success story of Car-Free Avenue shows that Tartu has set the right priorities for action. ‘Reaching the top six success stories for the second year in a row can be considered a sign of quality for Tartu’s systematic work towards a better and more sustainable living environment,’ said Helen Kalberg, Marketing Manager for the City of Tartu.

The virtual awards ceremony for the Green Destinations Story Awards will take place in March, at the ITB Berlin International Tourism Fair.
