Boat trip with Hansaetic barge Jõmmu

The Emajõgi river is one of the most important symbols of Tartu. For a fantastic way to admire the river’s picturesque landscape, climb aboard the Jõmmu barge, a replica of the wooden trade vessels that plied local waterways from Hanseatic times right up to the 20th century. This trip will take your guests along the river in both directions, providing unique perspectives of Tartu and the rustic landscapes of southern Estonia. Groups will gain insight into how trade was conducted in times of old.  Snacks and drinks can be served on board. The barge can also take guests to Lake Võrtsjärv or Lake Peipsi. Max capacity: 36 persons.

The Emajõgi-Peipsi barges were unique wooden trading vessels that sailed the inland waters for more than 600 years. In the 19th century, there were more than 500 of them on Lake Peipsi and over 200 could be seen anchored in the harbor of Tartu. Jõmmu was built in 2006 by using traditional medieval building methods by a group of enthusiasts. Today the barge Jõmmu and events organised by the Emajõe Lodjaselts have become integral parts of life in Tartu and various inland ports in Estonia.

Guests can also visit the Shipbuilding Hall to see with their own eyes how a new two-mast vessel twice the size of “Jõmmu” is already being built in Lodjakoja shipbuilding hall.
