Tartu - Estonia´s second biggest city (population 100,000) and the capital city of the country´s southern region. It is often seen as the intellectual and cultural centre for Estonia.
Home to the Estonia's top university, as well as a number of other institutes and research centres, Tartu is the nation's education and innovation capital. The city's academic credentials make it a great choice for all types of
scientific and medical conferences.
With everything within easy walking distance, Tartu has a distinctively small town feel. Social life centres around the neo-classical Dome Square and the British Park on Toomemägi Hill.
Tartu University, established in 1632, dominates the historic town centre. Conveniently, many of its buildings and lecture theatres, both modern and classical, are available for use as conference venues.
Tartu is one of Estonia´s prime conference destinations, hosting as many as 400 each year. The city and its environs are home to 37 conference and seminar venues with a combined seating capacity of 7,172. The largest are the
Dorpat Conference Centre (1,100), Vanemuine Concert Hall (959), Tartu University´s Assembly Hall (470) and the Athena Centre (270).
There are 12 hotels in Tartu, which come in 2-star, 3-star and 4-star varieties.
Jaani Cultural Quarter - an Old Town block made up of the medieval St John´s Church and the St Anthony´s Guild,
is Tartu´s best single spot for sights, activities and fun. With more than 1,000 terracota statues, the church itself is a must-see as well as a prime concert venue. a few metres away the historic St.Anthony´s is home to 22 arts and crafts workshops where visitors can watch masterss at work and browse the creations.
The 20,000 students who live here give Tartu a young, creative edge. The city has a vibrant café and bar culture that rivals that of the capital. There's never a shortage of interesting places for one-on-one discussion, relaxing breaks or evening unwinding.
The river of which Tartu is situated, the Emajõgi, can offer a wide range of activities or leisurely excursions.
