Tartu Ambassadors and Conferences Honoured at Gala Reception

The Estonian Convention Bureau, along with top officials from Tartu City Government, hosted a gala event on Wednesday evening to inaugurate new conference ambassadors as well as acknowledge the 17 international conferences held in the city last year.

Tartu Mayor Urmas Klaas, Deputy Mayor Raimond Tamm and ECB’s own Managing Director Kadri Karu delivered speeches and handed out awards at the reception, which saw the ceremonial appointment of three incoming members of the Tartu Conference Ambassador Programme.

The gathering took place at the city’s freshly-minted event venue, the Tartu Comb Factory, with nearly 100 guests attending. Troubadour Silver Sepp provided the evening’s surprise entertainment, delivering a musical performance using various fantastical instruments, including one fashioned out of a ski.

Outside of Tallinn, Tartu, with a population of 100,000, is by far Estonia’s most popular conference destination. Its status as both the nation’s primary university city and a busy technology hub have made it a particular magnet for science- and research-related events. The city’s hosting credentials have been boosted in recent years by the opening of several new visitor attractions, conference hotels and the prestigious Estonian National Museum.
